Saab has proudly manufactured automobiles since the late 1940s, and has a history of thoughtful design and innovation that has helped the brand to stand out among automakers. One thing Saab has done is create many firsts, like the first heated seat and the first feasible turbocharger in a production vehicle. Here are a few interesting facts about the cars that were born from jets:
Head in the Clouds: The Saab name has been around since 1937, when the quality-driven manufacturer only made aircraft. Ten years later, Saab introduced the first automobile from their designers, which took distinctive design cues from aerodynamic principles. The 92001 UrSaab was the airplane maker's first entry into the automobile world, and its entire chassis was evocative of an aircraft wing.
Sitting In the Hot Seat: Did you know that Saab invented the heated automobile seat? This particular feature is seen in almost any car on the road today, but Swedish-born Saab understood the health and comfort value of providing electrically-heated seating in their vehicles.
Blindsided: Saab was also the first auto manufacturer to introduce side-impact protective measures via metal reinforcement members inside the doors. At the time, head-on collisions were what the majority of automakers focused on when designing safety measures for their vehicles. Saab added this layer of internal armor to their cars to give better all-around protection.
Turbocharging the Passenger Car: Turbocharged cars operate on the principle of greater power delivery thanks to the delivery of additional air to the engine cylinders. Unfortunately, early turbochargers did not deliver this power smoothly, and often wasted kinetic energy in the process.
Saab engineer Per Gillbrand found a way around this problem with a valve that allowed increased and intelligent airflow for minimal waste and smoother acceleration. The takeaway is that Saab was able to put turbochargers in production vehicles that contained economy engines, producing more power and torque for smooth and efficient driving.
